Group Director Business Control

Broad Horizon is an IT service provider with a focus on data, digital transformation and cloud services. In the past ten years, Broad Horizon has grown to include several successful companies in the field of (managed) hosting, workspace, cloud, business solutions and data & AI. This broad portfolio of B2B IT services includes brands such as True, Cmotions, Pink Elephant, and, in Denmark, Delegate and Projectum. The success Broad Horizon has enjoyed based on its Buy & Build strategy was noticed in 2020 by London-based Private Equity investor EMK. Therefore, after EMK became a majority shareholder in 2020, the expansion of the portfolio of companies has accelerated, leading to 7 transactions in the last 12 months.
The rationale behind this strategy is that a multi-pillar IT solutions company can benefit from economies of scale and knowledge sharing, and has the international market (including large and leading customers) at its feet. Broad Horizon already has market share in the Benelux and Denmark, and a turnover of more than 130 million, with the ambition to grow substantially in 2021 and further years, both organically and through acquisitions.
At the core of Broad Horizon’s strategy is a commitment to the talent of its team members, and to the delivery of a complete portfolio of world-class IT services to its customers, with Microsoft as an important technology partner. M&A is a key driver for growth. While synergies between the acquired companies are fostered and stimulated, there is no operational integration of the different businesses; these can continue to operate under their historic brands. Back-end processes, however, are integrated into HR and Finance Shared Service Centers, to enable excellent talent management and performance management.

Job description

The Group Director Business Control reports to the CFO and leads the Business Control team. The Business Control team is responsible for introducing and strengthening value-based management and business control as a way of working. Coming from an fragmented, enterpreneurial set-up with decentral finance teams responsible for the breadth of financial management, the group is embarking on a strategy of centralization of financial processes and a segregation between financial admin (in a shared service center) and business control (managed centrally but very much a part of the businesses). Current business control activities are early stage; a basic financial performance management process exists but this needs to be strengthened and evolved. By investing in this key element of professionalization, the Business Control team will be uniquely positioned to provide insight into the drivers of performance, and the opportunities for improvement.

As Group Director Business Control, you lead a team of 6 Business Controllers, who each have responsibility for a business line. The team includes a mix of recent hires and team members who have graduated into a business role out of their pre-acquisition responsibility for the integral financial management of an operating company. Broad Horizon policy is that Business Controllers report into the Group Director Business Control by solid line. It is expected that the team will double within the next 1-2 years on the back of the acquisitive growth of the company; there is a strong commitment from Board and shareholders to provide the resources required for this growth. Functionally, the responsibilities of the Business Control team are centered around business control and performance management, but also include a liaison role between business executives and Group Finance, providing input on the record-to-report process, providing input on the continuous improvement of the period closing, financial planning including Budgeting and Forecasting, financial analysis including the ownership of monthly analyses during period closing, pricing and costing, support of business cases and projects as applicable, financial analysis of key strategic choices, and coaching of business stakeholders on Finance topics. Business Control is responsible for understanding and managing both the P&L, the balance sheet, and the cash flow statement; it is a key contributor to target setting, KPI definition and KPI reporting.

Your key objective is to make sure that the team (including yourself) delivers on the promise of a highly functional business control practise. While the management of Broad Horizon has an understanding of what you need to do to achieve this objective, ultimately it is up to yourself to define the criteria of success, the roadmap to success, and the actions to take to execute on this roadmap. You are the owner of Business Control.

Suggested priorities to serve this objective include:

  • Build top notch financial underpinnings of strategic plans and annual planning for the various operating companies, that roll up in a clear and consistent multi-year financial plan for the company, which in turn can serve as a foundation for the corporate finance strategy;
  • Monitor relentlessly the implementation of group strategy, based on comparisons of well-structured annual operational plans and budgets, and actual performance on drivers and outcomes; you contribute improvements and you constantly challenge your environment;
  • Provide unbiased and assertive advice to the management of operating companies and at group level, in doing so, increasing the overall financial savvy of the wider management team and building up a culture of strong financial performance;
  • Apply rigorous process management of the planning and control cycle (budget, management information and business control);
  • Develop clear reports, dashboards, analyses, templates, guidelines, and other control tools, that enable business executives to take high-quality decisions based on facts and insights;
  • Foster a supportive yet demanding culture for the team, leveraging the strengths of your team members to drive stakeholder satisfaction and building a high-performing team out of a currently diverse group of Finance professionals; as a result, the team should be up for all challenges present in a fast-paced, ambitious, and exponentially growing environment.

As Group Director Business Control you are part of the Finance MT within the group, together with the Director of Accounting and Reporting, and (the following to be hired) the Tax Director, Legal Counsel, and Corporate Finance Manager, under the leadership of the CFO.

You are enterprising, you are open and proactive towards the organization, and you identify improvements. You develop well-structured analyses to distil insights from data and facts. You place insights in an organizational context, and identify what needs to be done, and by whom. You communicate clearly with other team members and other teams, to realize impact based on your insights and understanding. You inspire your team and the wider organization, and organize their efforts to achieve a goal together. In addition, you are solution-oriented, you are a self-starter, you keep asking questions and you like a new challenge. Your style of leadership is based on drive, ambition, inspiration, empathy, enablement, and a commitment to the personal and professional development of team members.

You also have:

  • a completed university degree in Finance, Accounting, (Business) Economics and/or Business Administration, and at least one relevant post-graduate qualification, either in financial management such as the Dutch RC, ACMA, ACCA or (financially oriented) MBA, in accounting such as the Dutch RA or CPA, or in Finance such as CFA;
  • at least 10-15 years of relevant managerial work experience in a similar role, in which you have shown that you can set-up, develop and transform a financial organization yourself;
  • experience in an organization with a well-established business control model;
  • proven excellent analytical skills and the ability to process financial facts and relationships, that enable you to identify patterns, trends, and disruptions, and guide the analytical work of others where required; you work accurately, have an outstanding grasp of figures, and are fluent in the language of Finance;
  • You get energy from tackling complex issues in a rapidly developing organization, including issues of automation, consolidation, adaptation to changing group structures, and complex stakeholder alignment;
  • you show in your behavior and your experience a strong preference for the reliable, scalable and future-proof design of processes, systems and organizational forms;
  • you are not above the operational work required in situations where the future-proof solution is not yet there and when it becomes necessary to step in and get your hands dirty;
  • you are well able to manage projects and deadlines in a rapidly changing and rapidly growing environment;
  • you have strong verbal and written communication skills, you can present financial data in a clear manner;
  • you have a positively critical and convincing personality, pro-active and energetic;
  • you are a pragmatic team player who is experienced with stakeholder management;
  • your social intelligence allows you to navigate stakeholder relationships effectively and apply an optimum mix of formal authority and informal influence;
  • your knowledge of IT/automation/BI tooling and process innovation is up-to-date.
